I started playing in February '06, around when Path of Hope came out. I played any clan with Nonhumans available. Mantis 'cause they had Orochis, Phoenix 'cause they had Dragons (my handle comes from Temple of the 8), and of course, Ratlings. Oh, and Battle Maidens. I was a Nezumi player throughout Lotus and almost quit when I heard of their impending elimination till Faber himself talked me out of it.
Forced to pick a clan for the Race I opted for my second favorite, Phoenix, despite only two non-loyal Dragons were legal. I invested a great deal (time, money, effort, etc.) in the RftT and when my Clan still didn't win anything, I felt let down. Now thoroughly burnt out, I have renounced Clan loyalty and play whatever's fun.
I'll always maintain a Phoenix deck out of sentimentality, but you won't necessarily see me playing it at every tournament I go to.
The introduction done, I have a strategy blog (titled Courageous Sucking) on this network. The only time I've ever placed at a tournament was when I took second at GenCon Indy '08's Legacy tournament with a ridiculous Rat deck that could win on turn 3. Oh, and I took Top Phoenix at a Kotei, but I was 28th overall. So, what qualifies me to pontificate on strategy? Well, I read this
article which gave me the pretentiousness to think people would want to read what I have to type.
No, but seriously, read the article. It's technically about photography but it can be applied to just about any creative endeavor, L5R obviously included or I wouldn't have brought it up. Also, I haven't won much, but I've taught a lot of people to play. Heck, I have a Masters in Teaching even. Yes, really. Not in L5R though, biology. I've started playgroups, maintained playgroups, and introduced lots of people to the game.
So read the blog.
Or don't.
