Legend of the Five Rings

If you want to start playing L5R don't make a deck first thing. Borrow a friend's deck if you want to learn the game. But first thing, pick a faction. L5R is a great game but what keeps the players coming back is the story.

The first deck I built was a craptastic Khol Wall deck. Admittedly, I picked Unicorn since it was recommended to me because no one else in the store was playing it. However, as a nerd, I have a fondness for outsiders, underdogs, and misfits which drew me to the Unicorn and ultimately the Nezumi. I've been loyal to them since, or at least as loyal as I can be in the Samurai environment. I went with Phoenix for Samurai Edition because they too seemed like underdogs. So before you build a deck, pick a faction you like because then you'll have an investment in the game that'll keep you enjoying it.

If you don't follow the L5R story then you're missing out on the best part of the game. It's difficult to describe the extra glee I get when my Shiba Tsukimi issues a challenge to my opponent's Yoritomo Naizen or the hilarity that ensues when my opponent's nobody Scout lures my Chags4 into a pit trap. The story makes the game more fun. The story is the reason players compete.

So build decks later, read first. Obviously, next post is on deckbuilding.
